چکیده

The dissipation of tidal energy in Jupiter's satellite Io is likely to have melted a major fraction of the mass. Consequences of a largely molten interior may be evident in pictures of Io's surface returned by Voyager I.

Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets A test for Io’s magma ocean: Modeling tidal dissipation with a partially molten mantle

Magnetic induction measurements and astrometry provide constraints on the internal structure of Io, a volcanically active moon of Jupiter. We model the tidal response of a partially molten Io using an Andrade rheology which is supported by silicate deformation experiments. This model uses material properties similar to the Earth’s mantle and includes feedbacks between partial melting, tidal hea...

We performed 2D numerical simulations of oscillatory tidal flexing to study the interrelationship between tidal dissipation (calculated using the Maxwell model) and a heterogeneous temperature structure in Europa’s ice shell. Tidal heating and convection in Io

[1] The prodigious heat flux emitted from the surface of Jupiter’s moon Io is produced in the interior of the satellite by viscoelastic dissipation of tidal energy and is generally thought to be brought to the surface by convective motions. New models of Io’s equilibrium thermal state are constructed using self-consistent calculations of tidal heating and convective heat transport. These models...

A model for the temperature-dependence of tidal dissipation in convective plumes on icy satellites: Implications for Europa and Enceladus

To explain the formation of surface features on Europa, Enceladus, and other satellites, many authors have postulated the spatial localization of tidal heating within convective plumes. However, the concept that enhanced tidal heating can occur within a convective plume has not been rigorously tested. Most models of this phenomenon adopt a tidal heating with a temperature-dependence derived for...
